Jordan, like many countries in the Middle East and across the globe, faces a range of natural and man-made disaster risks, including earthquakes, droughts, floods, extreme heat and cold waves, landslides, famines, and terrorist attacks. The impact of global climate change further exacerbates the complexity and uncertainty surrounding disaster management, requiring enhanced preparedness, rapid response, effective recovery, business continuity, and a return to a better normal. However, despite these growing challenges, research underscores a critical gap in community participation in disaster management, which has traditionally been limited to institutional and organizational levels. In response to this, the Jordanian Humanitarian Resilience Society (JHRS) was founded in July 2010 under Society Law No. 22 for 2009, as a women-led organization dedicated to bridging this gap. As the first community-based organization (CBO) in Jordan and the Middle East focused on disaster management, JHRS is proud to be led by women who are committed to building resilience at institutional, organizational, and community levels. Resilience, as defined by JHRS, is the ability to anticipate, manage, respond to, and recover from unexpected incidents, particularly those marked by uncertainty and complexity. JHRS operates as a non-profit organization with a strong emphasis on empowering women and communities, enhancing their capacity to reduce disaster risks, promote sustainable development, and safeguard livelihoods. By serving all 12 governorates in Jordan, JHRS continues to lead the charge in fostering a culture of preparedness, resilience, and gender-inclusive disaster management.
