Advocacy and Policy Dialogue

Strengthening National DRR Strategies with Climate Focus

  • Integrates disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation into national development policies. Advocacy efforts by civil society organizations and international partners emphasized the need for cohesive strategies to address the increasing severity of flash floods and heat waves.

Call for Early Warning Systems

  • The United Nations Early Warnings for All Initiative, launched in 2022, advocates for universal coverage of early warning systems by 2027. This global policy dialogue has mobilized countries to enhance multi-hazard early warning systems to protect communities from climate-induced disasters.

 Youth Advocacy in Climate Policy

  • Youth -led advocacy to influence the adoption of enhanced flood resilience measures after devastating floods in 2015.

Community-Led Policy Advocacy

  • Community organizations worked with policymakers to integrate climate-smart DRR measures into the National Plan for Disaster Management.
  • Community-Based Advocacy for Climate Adaptation

Private Sector Engagement in Policy Dialogue

  • Engagement in Disaster Preparedness and Resilience
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Climate Action
  • Public-Private Dialogue on Water Security
  • Advocacy for Green Economy Policies

Women-Led Advocacy Dialogue

  • Inclusion of Gender Perspectives in National DRR Strategies
  • Youth and Women Empowerment Initiatives
  • Advocacy for Renewable Energy Access

Capacity building and learning

Sphere Standards Training in Iraq (2010):

  • Delivered training on Sphere Standards and Minimum Humanitarian Standards to local organizations in Iraq, incorporating disaster risk reduction (DRR) as a cross-cutting theme.
  • Focused on building participants’ understanding of climate-related vulnerabilities and integrating DRR principles into humanitarian response planning.

National Disaster Risk Reduction workshops for Jordan (2008 -2015):

  • Played a key role in developing and reviewing Jordan’s National DRR Strategy, emphasizing capacity-building programs for government officials and local stakeholders.
  • Included training components on integrating climate change adaptation (CCA) into DRR policies, ensuring a holistic approach to resilience.

Training Program on Crisis and Disaster Management in Yemen (2024):

  • Organized and supervised a training program in collaboration with the Jordan Engineers Association and the International Labour Organization (ILO).
  • Focused on recovery and reconstruction, highlighting the intersection of climate-induced disasters and DRR practices. The program included practical workshops on community-based approaches to resilience.

Integrating Women and Girls in Community-Based DRR (2024):

  • Designed a project inspired by the Integrating Adolescent Girls (IAG) in Community-Based DRR in Jordan initiative.
  • Conducted capacity-building activities in Amman, the Jordan Valley, and Zarka, equipping women and girls with knowledge and skills to address disaster risks and climate change impacts in their communities.

Collaboration with UNDRR and Swiss Cooperation Agency:

  • Over five years of working with UNDRR, contributed to designing and implementing training programs to enhance the capacity of regional stakeholders in DRR and climate resilience.
  • Topics included integrating climate data into risk assessments, community-driven adaptation strategies, and disaster-resilient urban planning.

Capacity Building in National Resilience Projects:

  • Worked with the UNDP on training programs for local governments and NGOs to align DRR strategies with climate change adaptation frameworks.
  • Developed learning modules on early warning systems, climate risk assessments, and sustainable recovery practices tailored to the Jordan.

Operationalization and implementation

  1. Integration of Climate Change into DRR Strategy:

O You ensured that the strategy included practical steps for addressing climate risks, such as integrating climate change adaptation measures into urban planning and infrastructure resilience.

  1. Capacity Building for Local Authorities:

Conducted workshops and training sessions for local government officials to implement the strategy. These sessions focused on operational tools such as climate risk assessments, hazard mapping, and incorporating DRR measures into development plans.

  1. Community-Based Resilience Programs:

Supported the rollout of community-based initiatives to operationalize the strategy, such as improving local early warning systems and establishing climate-resilient agriculture practices in vulnerable areas like the Jordan Valley.

  1. Partnership Development:

Facilitated collaboration between government agencies, NGOs, and international organizations to ensure the smooth implementation of strategy components. This included partnerships with organizations like the International Labour Organization (ILO) to address recovery and reconstruction efforts post-disasters.

  1. Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanisms:

Played a role in operationalizing frameworks for tracking progress on strategy implementation, ensuring alignment with both national goals and global frameworks such as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and Paris Agreement objectives.

Impact:

  • Enhanced disaster preparedness at local and national levels, with measurable improvements in response capabilities.
  • Strengthened the resilience of vulnerable communities to climate-induced risks, aligning with global and regional DRR and climate action frameworks.
  • Institutionalization of climate-smart DRR practices in Jordan’s governance systems.
